Data Elements or Items

A data element or item represents the atomic level of data storage:

• "Customer Number"
• "Person Height"
• "Order Amount"

When a data item is used in an entity, that usage is known as an attribute of that entity.

Some tools and methods hold unattached data items in a data dictionary, available for use as attributes.

Others only record data items when they are attached to entities as attributes.
