The Data Flow Diagram (DFD)

The data flow diagram is used to discover data in processes, not to model process.

The pioneers of structured analysis and design - Gane and Sarson, DeMarco, and others - devised the DFD to formalize analysis.

Data items are cataloged in a data dictionary, then run through algorithms to normalize and aggregate them into an entity-relationship diagram.
