The Wizard of Oz was a software salesman ahead of his time!

• Stephen Manes in his The New York Times column "Personal Computers" (28 Nov. 1995, page B9):

  "Today's Windows-based personal computers are among the least accessible consumer products on the market"

• William Hobson wrote in a letter published on page 65 of the 27 Nov 1995 PC Week:

  "What is the killer app driving users to Windows 95? It's Windows 3.1 itself!"

• Anonymous e-mail snatched from the Rational OMT forum:

  "Several people are now asking is PowerBuilder really object-oriented? Will it ever be?"

Is there a theme here? Are vendors overselling their wares just a tinsy, insy bit? Do we expect to see untutored grandparents innocently running seamless, distributed objects on the intergalactic net by Christmas next year? Perhaps not in my lifetime (but I'm old and skeptical).
