Once your eyes recover from the dazzle of "unnatural" yellows, greens, oranges you realize that all colors belong to nature. Now look for the circular saw marks on the upper planks. Now do wyou see the straight-accross band saw marks on the lower remains of an attached shed? Clearly these planks were sawn in different eras.

As a dense, low morning fog began to lift in the mid-morning, this otherwise simple shed behind the Crane mellon barn took on an other-worldly glow of little green men. And then, just like that, it was gone. I've never seen it since in a dozen visits.

Is this just a door? Or is it barn art, from the knowing eye and loving hand of a farmer/painter who sees more than splintered wood and bent nails? You be the judge.

Seldom do we see an old farm building showing such ravages of age along with the tender care of ownership. No such barns and outbuildings have economic justification. Most will disappear, to the farmers' regret, within this decade into heaps of blackberry bushes or ashes of a local fire department's practice burn.

Spotting this in my rear view mirror as I crested Hessel Road, I slammed the brakes and swung around in front of the fire station to go back for a closer look. Within half an hour I had permission and access to the property. As the sun rapidly dropped, slicing across this old chicken house at an acute angle, I waited till the shadows of each batten march semetrically across their covered boards.

A farmer friend, looking at my 48"x39" canvas print, said of this door "If the other hinge was there I'd have tried to open it!"

A soft palette of dawn streaming over the shoulder of Sonoma Mountain brushes Shakespeare's immortal words gently across the face of faded plank siding. Some near-forgotten farmer crafted this hen house to shelter helter-skelter flocks from foxes and frost. No doubt he spent not a moment considering how, seventy years on, the subtle hues of mold, old paint, and wind-etched grain would find a place to hang in the halls of Nature's museum.

Less than three minutes later, a blinding furnace of direct sun has climbed relentlessly over the mountain brow, slashing that same silvered siding with newborn tones of brilliant orange. All subtlety is forsaken, shaken off till sunset shadows recast these boards in tones blue and shimmering gray. The human brain, a marvelously inventive deceiver, fools the eye to see the same. But look side-by-side and see the truth: photography is "painting with light", and the no brush is bigger than the sun's.

Serendipity in chemistry. This is the east end of "Hen house number one". The sun was alread down, blanketed with incoming fog which filtered out yellow and red light. To capture anything in near darkness required a long exposure. Since the film emulsion layer which captures blue light is more sensitive than the red layer, a phenomenon known as "reciprocity failure" occurs, enhancing the inherent blue reflected from late evening sky.

More meets the eye than white on red. With hinges mismatched and tacked askew, bailing wire in the hasp supplanted by a pivoting metal strap, redundant still with a simple wooden toggle, how many ways is this door secured, albeit crooked, to the fraying fabric of its old red barn? A mossy brow of rusted flashing guards the white-planked frame top. Hollow logs between barn and ground suggest a move sometime distant past, whole sills and beams and timbers rolling in a stately waltz across the farm meadow. Why? Where? Who knows?

I had only twenty minutes, staring directly into the setting sun, to wangle a place on my belly in the barnyard amongst curious heffers sniffing at my bulky 4x5 camera. A pop-out reflector blocked direct sun streaming through the upper bars (not shown) of the chute. One shot was all I got. It is my favorite image. Even on the light table I loved it, so the scan is 1GB - double my usual practice. A print on photographic canvas, 60"x30", hangs over my bed.
