and Red Herrings

What some people call a planned or accidental sequence of processes. 

Work stoppage would be a better name in many cases. The optimum work flow consists of one null process. The ideal solution to any problem is the Zen one - just don't have a problem.

Failing that, when we have truly "re-engineered process" to achieve results with minimum effort, then perhaps it makes some sense to document and automate disjoint workflow steps which comprise a process.
